We know you probably have questions, and we’re here to help. Below are some of the common ones we get on our Tune campers, the ordering process, and everything else. If you don’t see an answer, we’re just a phone call or email away—please feel free to contact us here.
The “Custom Wiring to Customer Supplied Battery” package includes the adapters needed to interface with nearly any 12v portable power system. If you plan on doing a DIY power system, we are able to run wires to the location you prefer, but Tune Outdoor will not hardwire into a fuse box. Please feel free to reach out if you have additional power-related questions.
Every Tune comes standard with a third brake light, but we do not wire it. During your build process, we will recommend a partner that can do this for you.
For most vehicles, our campers install directly with no required modification. However, if you have a truck with a composite bed like the GMC Canyon or Chevy Colorado, we will need to install bed rail stiffeners to prevent your truck bed from flexing, warping, or cracking. This requires holes drilled into the truck bed and rivets used to permanently mount this piece to your truck bed. The piece stays underneath the bed rail and does not affect usable truck bed space. There are also smaller modifications that may need to be made for Honda Ridgelines, 1st Gen Ford Mavericks, 4th Gen Toyota Tacomas, and 5th Gen Ford Rangers. Please reach out to our team if you have any questions about the modifications for these truck models.
You can only get a Tune camper installed at our HQ in Denver, Colorado, or by one of our certified dealers in the US and Canada to ensure correct installation and meet use liability requirements. Please visit our dealer page to find the one closest to you.
The mounting hardware should be inspected after 250 miles, 500 miles, 1,000 miles, and 5,000 miles. After that, it should be checked quarterly throughout the year. Watch this tutorial on how to tighten your mounting hardware.
The Tune M1 and the Tune M1L were designed to stay on. If you need to take it off, we offer camper jacks, which allow for relatively easy removal and re-installation. You can order camper jacks on the accessory page on our website. Currently, camper jacks are only available for the Tune M1 and are not compatible with the Tune M1L.
The Tune M1L is our lighter, more compact camper, perfect for tighter trails or simpler setups. Comparatively, the Tune M1 is larger, with more interior space and T-track for gear, ideal if you want maximum comfort and storage.
We anticipate a reduction in your average gas mileage of 2-5 mpg when using the Tune M1, with larger engines experiencing a lesser impact. The extent of this impact will be heavily influenced by your driving habits.
We require the removal of roof racks, tonneau covers, or anything else that is permanently mounted in a location that will interfere with the camper, including on top of or on the inner sides of the truck bed.
A Tune M1 on a 5' Tacoma will start at 400 lbs. A Tune M1 on a 5.5' F-150 will start at 500 lbs. The Tune M1L starts at 341 lbs on a 5’ Tacoma.
Each Tune M1 and Tune M1L is custom built for your truck model. We support most popular brands and sizes; if you have any questions about your specific truck, give us a call. Please note, Rivians are only compatible with the Tune M1 at this time.
Our campers are built based on the bed length, bed width, and cab height of each truck. If all three of those measurements are within .5” of each other, we support swapping from one truck to another. Usually you can stay within the same brand of trucks, but changing from one brand to another is often not possible.
Yes. Your stock mirrors will always be wider than the Tune M1, so you don’t need to extend them in any way.
Yes. Both the Tune M1 and the Tune M1L have plenty of T-track on the roof where you can attach your roof racks. You cannot put roof racks on the truck itself as they may interfere with the bed platform.
Our campers mount via clamps on the bed rails.
This question really depends on your intended use case. We initially designed the Tune M1 for a stock Tacoma. Because the lightweight design positions at least 60% of the weight in front of the rear axle, it does not sag your truck’s suspension like other campers would. If you have questions about vehicle modifications, our dealers or Runnin' 4 Tacos are a great resource to utilize, as this is generally their area of expertise. We are happy to make recommendations or refer you to an overland-specific vehicle outfitter.
The torque specification for our mounting hardware is 8ft/lb.
Our current lead time varies based on demand, but it is typically 75-90 days from the signature of your Purchase Order and your initial payment after deposit.
Our preferred payment method is ACH as there is no additional fee. We also accept credit card (2.9% fee added to payment total), wire transfer, check, and cash (in-person only).
All of our truck campers are designed, sourced, and assembled in Colorado, but we do have Tune Outdoor Dealer locations around the country. You can get your Tune M1 or M1L shipped and installed at any of these locations – Check out our Dealer Network here.
A $500 deposit starts the process. Once we receive your deposit, you will receive an email with a calendar link to book a meeting where we will go over the details of your build.
Once we complete that meeting, we will send you a Purchase Order for signature and payment. From there, we will order all the parts for your build and start building. Once you make your first payment, you will receive either an install booking link or be slotted into a shipment to our dealers.
An upcycled camper is a lightly used and completely refurbished camper. It passes our 68-point inspection and is offered for sale with a full 3-year warranty. These are available for installation at our HQ, or we can ship it to your preferred dealer location.
Our install-ready campers come pre-built and will only fit the truck(s) listed. There is no manufacturing lead time on these campers, so one can be installed quickly - normally within two weeks. Shipping to a dealer location is possible.
All Tune M1s and Tune M1Ls are designed, sourced, and assembled in Colorado at our HQ. We have a modern, global supply chain for components based on vendor dependability and quality – we are constantly working to assure the best components for Tune campers, both nationally and internationally.
We’d love to show you around our HQ and showroom in Denver. Book an appointment with us here. If you’re not in Colorado, we’re happy to connect you to our closest owner. We attend nearly all major trade shows and events around the country. A full calendar of events is listed on the events page of our website. Feel free to give us a call, and we’ll figure out a way to get your eyes on a Tune!
The remaining warranty will only transfer if Tune Outdoor facilitates the transfer at our HQ in Denver. We will remove the camper, complete a 68-point inspection, address any needed repairs, and then reinstall the camper on the new owner’s truck. The inspection and refresh are provided at no cost; however, labor and materials for standard wear-and-tear items are the responsibility of the customer.
We offer a 3-year warranty on both product and workmanship, and lifetime support.
Starlink does not recommend mounting the Starlink Mini underneath any structure. That being said, we have not found that any panels are impeding functionality.
The Truma Varioheat heater can only be mounted on the driver’s side. Our specific design and installation procedures were approved by Truma, making us a certified installer. We are not allowed to modify our design or the installation process on a case-by-case basis.
It is imperative that you do not move the control panel on your Truma heater. This is part of the certification process, and if you move the control panel, it will void the Truma warranty, along with Tune’s warranty relating to the heating system.
If you have the Truma Heater, the propane tank will always be mounted on the driver's side of the Tune. You can attach a mount and propane tank to the passenger side if you do not have a heater or would like a tank on each side.
This depends on the weather, altitude, and settings on your heater. Truma officially quotes 1lb of propane per night. This efficiency will decrease as the camper is opened or the temperature lowers.
The blackout package changes the interior and exterior of the sleeping platform and cab access bulkhead from white FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Polypropelene) to black FRP. This cosmetic change is purely aesthetic, as the material remains the same, but offers a color match that some customers find particularly appealing.
Please note: The roof remains white, even with the Blackout Package, to maintain a brighter interior and reduce heat absorption.
The sunblocker panels prevent any sunlight from coming through the roof of your Tune M1 or M1L. A thin layer of carbon in the middle of the panel turns the standard translucent FRP into an opaque panel. The sunblocker panels have the same UV protection as the standard FRP panels - they do not have any impact on how hot your camper would get if left in direct sunlight when compared to the standard translucent roof FRP panels.
No. Even flexible panels can crack internally if stepped on or pressed on too hard. Always avoid direct contact from you or your belongings. Cracks or damage can be invisible to the naked eye until a later date where, if they are bad enough, they can manifest as bubbles, discoloration, or something similar.
Covering your solar panels with bikes, bags, tarps, etc. blocks sunlight and traps heat. This can overheat the panel and reduce its lifespan. A shadow will reduce the power output of the panel, but something physically resting on the panel could cause dangerous heat issues.
Park in the sun when charging your battery with your solar kit as your solar panels work best in full sunlight. Try to avoid partial shading for long periods of time.
Yes, you should monitor your battery levels and check your charge status regularly. If you're not using your camper for a while or if the battery is full without any discharge loads, disconnect the panels. Make sure your battery has a charge controller to prevent overcharging.
It is recommended that you check your panel(s) frequently for bubbling or discoloration on the panel, loose wires or connectors and any unusual smells or heat. If anything seems off, contact us before using your solar-based electrical systems.
Park fully in the shade for all times of the day and disconnect the panels from the battery. Care for your battery as outlined by the manufacturer, and avoid deep discharge of batteries.
